The Finnovation Lab, held on 2nd September, marked a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s journey to become a regional hub for financial technology innovation. Organized by the Sri Lanka FinTech Summit with support from leading industry players, universities, and government stakeholders, the Lab provided a dynamic platform for collaboration, learning, and knowledge exchange in the country’s growing FinTech ecosystem.

Recognizing the gap between academic learning and practical application, the Lab aimed to equip young innovators with hands-on experience in emerging financial technologies. Over 200 students from leading public and private universities participated, gaining exposure to real-world industry challenges and interacting with professionals, regulators, and innovators. Workshops, panel discussions, and mentorship sessions covered topics such as artificial intelligence in finance, blockchain applications, digital payments, and cybersecurity, combining theoretical knowledge with practical insights.

Beyond skill development, the Lab facilitated networking opportunities, allowing students and startups to connect with investors, industry leaders, and government representatives during the Sri Lanka FinTech Summit on 24th & 25th September 2025 at BMICH. The initiative also introduced FinTech incubator programs and collaborative research projects with universities, fostering pathways for entrepreneurial ventures and innovative solutions with tangible impact.

Highlighting the Lab’s significance, Summit Chair Damith Pallewatte stated, “Finnovation Lab is where ideas meet opportunity—an ecosystem designed to unlock the full potential of Sri Lanka’s FinTech talent.” Co-Chair Dr. Kumudu Megasooriya added, “By connecting students, professionals, and innovators, Finnovation Lab is turning theory into action and preparing the next generation of FinTech leaders.”

By bridging education and industry, the Finnovation Lab empowers youth, nurtures talent, and drives innovation, reinforcing Sri Lanka’s vision of becoming a regional FinTech hub. Through structured programs, mentorship, and practical exposure, the initiative ensures a sustainable pipeline of skilled professionals and innovative solutions, positioning the country as a center for digital finance excellence in South Asia.
